When considering setting up your CDM and your electronic health record it is important to include in your lab results the location of your draw. Draws are commonly done by vein and that of course would be your default site but a draw done via a central line, a PICC line, a port, or an arterial line should be reported on the result as part of the medical record as being drawn from this location. This is important not only from the medical aspect but also in considering charges that may be incurred as a result of a draw being done by a respiratory therapist or other ancillary staff who may do multiple blood draws from these sites. With the advent of EHRs such as EPIC and others this is a relatively easy set up that can generate and save your site many dollars in an audit venue.
